Mehl, B. Max. CATALOG OF THE CELEBRATED NUMISMATIC COLLECTION FORMED BY WILLIAM FORRESTER DUNHAM. COMPLETE SERIES OF THE UNITED STATES COINAGE... Fort Worth, June 3, 1941. 4to, original embossed printed gold and silver card covers. 287, (1) pages; 4169 lots; frontispiece portrait of Dunham; text illustrations and facsimiles. Two enlarged photographic plates of both sides of Dunham’s 1804 dollar, commissioned by Mehl and inscribed by him on the back, bound in by Alan Grace. Photocopy prices realized list bound in. Outer margins of 1804 dollar plates a bit worn, not affecting images. Very good or better. One of Mehl’s most important sales, made all the more special by the inclusion of large photographic enlargements of the 1804 dollar. These plates were distributed selectively by Mehl and are rarely encountered outside of the deluxe edition Dunham catalogue. Ex Armand Champa, who had these plates tipped into the catalogue by his binder Alan Grace. Includes a handwritten note by Champa to this effect. Adams A+: “Landmark Sale. Virginia shilling. 1822 $5.
