Two octavo volumes (9.25” x 6.25”). 272, 265 pages, index. Northwest Historical Series II . Illustrated. Publisher's finely-ribbed blue cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Bindings very lightly rubbed, hinges just starting but still very sound, signed by previous owner Fred Barton, and with his bookplate reproducing a Charles M. Russell photograph inscribed to him by Russell. Mylar pocket for the document affixed to the front free endpaper in volume I. Front pastedown in volume II with reproduction of a C.M. Russell drawing, and both volumes with western photographs affixed to the rear pastedown endpapers and with Barton's signature again. The document is a voucher for $11.05 for tobacco and is signed by the warden C.B. Adriance, and approved and signed by J.H. Roberts and Granville Stuart, directors. The document measures 14” x 8.5” and has three folds. The book and document are housed together in a quarter morocco over marbled paper slipcase with a book-back spine in six compartments with five raised bands and gilt lettering and rules. “Granville Stuart was one of the first to raise cattle in Montana. During the 1880s cattle boom he was manager and for a time part owner of the largest outfit in Montana, The D-H-S. Most of the second volume is devoted to this period. Stuart was an important figure in Montana, the president of the state's first stock grower's association and president of the Board of Stock Commissioners.
