<B>Gordon William Lillie Pawnee Bill : Color Photo Card Inscribed by Pawnee Bill in <I>Oklahoma.</B></I></B></I><B> A Novel, by Courtney Ryley Cooper.</B></I> (Boston: Little, Brown, 1926). First edition. Octavo (7.5” x 5”). 303 pp. Publisher's dark blue cloth lettered in a lighter blue-green on the front cover and spine. Top edge stained green. A fine copy, housed in a custom quarter morocco book-back slipcase. The book is dedicated by Cooper: “<I>To Major Gordon W. Lillie (Pawnee Bill) without whose name no story of Oklahoma could be complete.</B></I>” Inscribed photograph is mounted opposite the dedication on the copyright page. Lillie learned the Pawnee language and billed himself as the “white chief of the Pawnees.” Lillie met Wild Bill Cody and worked for a brief time as a translator for the Pawnee Indians appearing in Cody's Wild West Show. Lillie later organized two wild west shows of his own, the first failing in less than a year. The second show prospered and toured for 20 years, occasionally in Europe. He was later a partner with Cody after their shows merged.
