ALS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” five pages on two sets of adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.25, House of Commons letterhead, July 18, 1911. Letter to Edward Pickersgill, regarding an appointment as a London Magistrate. In part: “The King has been pleased to signify by telegraph his approval of your appointment as one of the London Stipendary Magistrate, & I am arranging to have this appointment announced in tomorrow’s newspaper. It cannot however take effect till next Monday…Let me again express my satisfaction at being enabled to make an appointment which will I am confident make for the humane & enlightened administration of justice in the Metropolis.” In very good to fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical fold and scattered light toning and soiling. Pickersgill sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1911, resigning to become a magistrate. His post was short-lived as he died in October of 1911.
