ALS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 5 x 8, Treasury Chambers letterhead, October 31, 1927. Short letter of thanks to Mr. Drinkwater. In full: “It is good of you to remember your promise to send me your book on Oliver Cromwell, & I shall look forward very much to reading it.” Central horizontal fold, some scattered light toning and soiling, a couple minor creases, and a couple paperclip marks to top edge, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned 8 x 10 portrait of Churchill, matted and framed to an overall size of 10.75 x 13.
In 1927, English poet and dramatist John Drinkwater published the book Oliver Cromwell: A Character Study, using many of the 17th century Lord Protector of England’s letters and speeches as a basis for his work. Churchill’s interest in Cromwell dated at least to his tenure as First Lord of the Admiralty and prior to World War I, when he endeavored to name a British battleship the HMS Oliver Cromwell—a request denied by British royalty. Cromwell continues to be a divisive figure in European history. Though revered by most British historians, he also is reviled by others for near-genocidal tactics against Catholics in Scotland and Ireland. Although those policies contributed to the animosity between Ireland and the United Kingdom, Churchill still admired Cromwell and, as evidenced here, welcomed the opportunity to read more about him.
