Esteemed American painter (1836–1910) whose supreme skill in depicting the landscape and culture of nineteenth-century America earned him a place among the towering figures in the history of art. ALS signed “W. Homer,” one page, 6 x 9.5, Hotel Westminster letterhead, December 2, 1904. Letter to Mr. Newcomb, his grocery merchant in Portland, Maine. In part: “I leave…this afternoon for Florida - Good luck to you!" He closes by quoting the beginning of the first verse of “Bay of Biscay, Oh!” by John Renfro Davis. "Ye gentleman of England, That live at home at ease, Ah! Little do you think, Upon the dangers of the seas." Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Homer’s hand. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and mild overall toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
