Artist Winold Reiss was born on September 16, 1886, in Karlsruhe, Germany. A gifted portraitist, Reiss challenged the convention of racial stereotyping by portraying African American, Native American, and Asian American subjects as dignified individuals. The condition of this of this pastel shows well preserved stature with some wear to the back of the pastel but otherwise shows no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this framed pastel is 22 3/8" x 16 1/4" and the visible artwork measures 19" x 12 5/8".
