Cabinet card photograph measures 7 7/8”x4 3/4”, beige single matte 8 1/2"x 5 1/4”, high to medium contrast—minor yellowing, and focus is good—sharp in the middle but blurs slightly on the right. There are also a couple of spots from foxing. Photographer is identified as F.A. Cook. Cook was a part of Cook and Butler operating out of Reno in 1883. Mautz tells us that he was also active in Winnemucca, but the timeframe is not known. Overall, this is a nice cabinet card depicting the school children of Winnemucca posing in front of what is probably the first school house. Frank Baud came to Winnemucca in 1862. He was the first postmaster when a post office was established in 1866. Baud died in 1868 and left 500 dollars to build the first school house in Winnemucca.
