<B>Winiama (Burkina Faso)</B></I><BR>Mask with a single Horn<BR>Wood, pigment<BR>Height: 27 inches Width : 8 ¾ inches Depth: 13 inches<BR><BR>This mask, with its sharply curving single horn, has widely spaced "target" eyes, a hooked nose, tab ears, a wide open mouth showing upper and lower teeth, and, below the chin, a handle by which the mask could be held during its athletic dances. The coloring is black, white, and red.<BR><BR>This mask probably represents a bush spirit, protective of its community, and was danced often at dry season rituals and especially at elders' funerals.<BR><BR>There is only minor paint chipping.
