Wings (Paramount, 1927). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Former aviator William Wellman, only 28, directed this war picture, the first feature film to win an Academy Award, and still the only silent film to win Best Picture. Two World War I aviators (Buddy Rogers, Richard Arlen) compete for the love of a nurse ("It Girl" Clara Bow). Almost 75 years before "Pearl Harbor" would steal the plot as a pretext to display Ben Affleck's pecs, this film itself borrows liberally from Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms;" the book would be adapted for the screen five years later, with Gary Cooper as Hemingway's hero. He ascended to that leading man status via his breakthrough performance in this film, a small supporting role as an aviator which launched his upward trajectory to stardom. The dogfight scenes keep fresh longer than the moldy story, outshining even Michael Bay's loud spectacle. This lobby card has pinholes, crease marks in the corners and wear on the edges, but the red title demonstrates how vivid the colors remain. Fine/Very Fine.
