Mexican War and Union commander (1786–1866) nicknamed “Old Fuss and Feathers” for his love of military pageantry. Hand-addressed and free franked mailing envelope, addressed in Scott’s hand to “Thurlow Weed, Esq., Albany, N. Y.,” and franked at the top, “Free, Winfield Scott, M. Gen’l.” Scattered soiling and creasing, a few brushes to signature and address, and tape remnants to reverse, otherwise fine condition. Weed was a New York political boss. While he never held national office himself, he was the principal political advisor to the prominent New York politician William H. Seward and was instrumental in the presidential nominations of William Henry Harrison, Henry Clay, Zachary Taylor, Winfield Scott, John Charles Frémont, and Abraham Lincoln. RRAuction COA.
