Union general (1786–1866) who was a hero of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, and became General-in-chief of the US Army in 1841, a position he still held at the start of the Civil War. A Virginian, he was the only non-West Pointer of Southern origin in the Regular Army to remain loyal to the Union. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite three-quarter length portrait of Scott, by E. Anthony of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Winfield Scott.” Reverse is also signed and inscribed in black ink, “To Miss Janie Turnbull—la cadatte of the noblest of soldiers & most patriotic of mothers. God will cherish his own. Winfield Scott.” In fine condition, with light scattered surface marks and toning. An optimistic note from the ‘Grand Old Man of the Army,’ as his Union troops were dying on the field of battle.
