Winfield Scott and Daniel Webster Wall Plaques
Winfield Scott and Daniel Webster Wall Plaques. An exquisitely finished set of two cast iron plaques produced in conjunction with the 1852 presidential campaign. These 10.5" x 12.5" high relief profile portraits depict Whig candidate Winfield Scott and elder statesman Daniel Webster. (A third plaque for Franklin Pierce is known, but is not included here.) Both items enjoy glossy dark brown surfaces accentuated by the use of gold paint. Scott's plaque has the paint applied to its inner border, whereas Webster's is more lavishly decorated with paint covering the portrait as well as the border. Both pieces are signed on the verso with stencils by the maker, Chase Brothers & Co, and both carry 1852 dates. Very fine condition.
