Winfield Scott: A Fabulous Patriotic 1/9th Plate Ambrotype Winfield Scott is probably one of the least appreciated American historical figures. He first came to prominence as a young hero in the War Of 1812 and played a major role on the American scene for nearly a half century. He was one of the great heroes of the Mexican War, an 1852 Whig Presidential candidate, and senior U.S. Military commander during the early days of the Civil War. This ambrotype appears to have been created for commercial sale with a dramatic image of Scott in uniform in the foreground while an American flag waves behind him. His name appears at the bottom along with a border of 5-pointed stars (not present on the engraving from which this is copied). The image of Scott is too old to date from his 1852 candidacy, so this is probably a patriotic item from the earliest days of the Civil War. Choice condition with terrific display appeal, the ambro is housed in the original hinged embossed leatherette case with gold trim.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
