Naval officer who commanded the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba and who led the expedition to rescue Adolphus Greeley in the Arctic. ALS signed “W. Scott Schley, Lt. Comdr. U.S.A.,” one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 7, March 1, 1870. Brief letter making financial arrangements. In part: “Cashier of Eastern Savings Bank pay to my wife Anne R. Schley, the amount of money now standing to the credit of my children.” In fine condition, with small block of toning from a two-cent revenue stamp affixed to lower left, and a few light creases.
