Winchester model 70 pre-64 .30-06 caliber, serial #195788. Finely custom engraved and stocked, signed J. Kusmit beneath serial number. The rifle shows fine quality scroll engraving on action, flush gold inlay ofbear, antelope, matching engraving on breech of barrel. Floorplate is nicely engraved with panel portrait of running stag. The metal pistol grip cap is engraved and the buttplate is engraved and milled. The gun shows ahigh-quality burl walnut stock that is fancy checkered in a fleur de lis pattern. The gun shows a exotic forend cap. The condition is fine to excellent as refurbished at time of engraving. The bolt shows engine-turning, the action is crisp, the bore is slightly dark, showing use and needs cleaning badly as it was shot and not cleaned. Bore condition not determined. The gun shows Butterfield & Butterfield tag #2494. J. Kusmit was awell-known factory engraver who also accepted commissions and it’s possible this rifle could have been returned for engraving by Kusmit through the factory or shipped to him directly to be engraved. Worth researching.
