Winchester model 1873 saddle ring carbine, factory engraved, gold and nickel plated, and used for factory exhibition purposes. Serial #495094B. This carbine was originally received at the warehouse March 28th, 1895, shipped from the warehouse March 28, 1895, order number 16519 and there are over 50 lines of entries in regard to this serial number. Most notably mentioning the gold engraving, length, fancy checkered stock, New York Expo 1898, Pan-American exhibition 1901, factory presentation account 173120, and many repairs and returns spanning a period of 8 years where this ’73 was constantly used and exhibited by the Winchester factory. This is the most extensive and highest number of entries this cataloger and other Winchester experts have examined. The Winchester shows a typical Ulrich pattern of jumping stag on left surrounded by scrolls with typical line and border accents. The barrel shows 90-95% factory original nickel finish which has gone to satin and is completely unpolished with just some slight beginning age. The magazine tube shows 20-30% nickel drifting to patina with a couple of dents and some browning and erosion just starting. The frame shows 20-30% rich factory gold gilt, balance has drifted and shows some of the base has drifted to a natural patina. The hammer, lever, and small parts show considerable nickel and gilt as do the barrel bands which are gilded. The checkered deluxe walnut stocks are very good plus to near fine with sharp checkering, just some minor dings and scratches to the varnish, a couple of mars. The action is tight, the interior good but shows firing and use. Original sights and small parts. A very few 1873 carbines were factory engraved and they are particularly when dual plated and almost never encountered with deluxe checkered wood. Adding to the importance of this Winchester is the fact that it is a documented exhibition gun for two of Winchesters most important exhibitions. Est: $60,000 - $120,000
