Winchester model 1873, .44-40 caliber rifle, 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, rifle butt, serial #108560A. The left sideplate is lightly scratched "9/26/1904" with the name "Andrew Peterson". And right sideplate is also scratched in same hand,"Springdale" and "Mont" which we would guess to be Montana. This scratch cut is absolutely original to the period in our opinion. The rifle shows 5-15% original blue mixing with a brown patina, some scattered erosion, minor pinprick pitting, spotting, staining, and normal aging. The markings are good, except no caliber marking on lifter visible, may never have been marked. The rear sight has been period changed to a DW King buckhorn sight in the original dovetail. The front sight is standard type. The stocks are fair to good with a couple large chips missing to the forend, some minor cracks, dings, mars, and light cleaning to the buttstock. The action is good, the bore is fair to good and may clean as it isslightly dark. A good '73 that shows honest use and may tell a story once Andrew Peterson's history is researched. Note: There is a Springdale Montana located between Billings and Bozeman. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
