Winchester Third Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Special Order 30-Inch Barrel
Winchester Model 1866 Rifle manufactured in 1872. This Third Model Rifle has the serial number "106547" stamped in block letters on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The rifle is fitted with a special order., 30-inch octagon barrel and sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock. The crescent buttplate has a hinged trapdoor and the rifle is complete with the four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod. The barrel is fitted with "Rocky Mountain" front sight with nickel silver blade and has a blank in the rear sight dove-tail. A folding combination rear sight with hinged peep is mounted on the upper receiver tang. The hammer has fine knurling with a lower border. The loading lever is the early small pattern and the trigger has a pointed tip. The indented loading port cover is retained by a single screw. The rifle has a blued barrel and loading port cover, casehardened hammer and loading lever and distinctive brass receiver, forearm cap and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are black walnut with a satin varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style, two-line, legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860.".

Fine. The brass forearm cap, receiver and buttplate have a mellow patina and are in fine condition. The receiver shows minimal handling wear; the side-plate joints are tight and are not battered. The receiver, forearm cap and buttplate have minimal dents and scratches. The stock and forearm are very fine with minimal handling marks. The barrel, magazine tube, hammer and lever have a plum-brown patina with scattered and very fine pitting. The barrel has a mottled brown patina with sharp edges. The barrel legend is light but fully legible. The front and rear sight are period but are probably not original to the rifle. This is an attractive example of a 1872 production Model 1866 Winchester Rifle with scarce, special order 30-inch barrel.
