Winchester Second Model Hotchkiss bolt-action U.S. Naval rifle, 45-70 cal., 29” barrel, blue finish, wood stock, #1455. This gun is in overall very good condition showing approx. 50% original blue finish on metal surfaces with balance gone to a brown patina; very good bore, crisp action, sharp markings including “US”, anchor and “VP” proofs on the breech end of the barrel; the wood stock is in overall very good condition showing some scattered nicks and mars from carry and storage and the circle “P” cartouche behind the lower tang and a clear cartouche on the left side of the stock above the trigger assembly; additionally, there is a “427 C 8” stamped on the right side of the butt stock with a note from our consignor that this gun was previously in the Quantico, Virginia Naval Museum; also retaining an original military leather sling and the correct metal cleaning rod.
