Arsenal parkerized refinish utilizing the "W" type bayonet attachment stamped "W' on the left side, four row, nineteen-hole heat shield, brass bead. (The type W was adopted in June of 1944) The heat shield, unlike the fakes, has two rivets showing on each side where it is attached to the bayonet attachment. The 20" barrel is marked for cylinder choke with 2 3/4 inch chamber. The serial number of the gun dates to 1942 manufacture according to Winchester Collectors Association. The barrel has the correct three threaded notches on the underside of the barrel for the bayonet attachment, The underside of the barrel appears to be stamped "42". (hard to read as it is mostly under the barrel extension, solid frame, not take-down. A flaming bomb proof is present on top of the barrel above the Winchester trademark. ( After circa serial number 915,000 all M97 barrel's were marked with the ordnance bomb. "U.S." stamped on the left side of the receiver. The barrel has the correct Winchester barrel markings including the address and patent dates ending in July .10 for M97's manufactured after serial number circa 915,000. Matching serial numbers marked on the bottom of the receiver and takedown collar. The muzzle is rounded with a couple of small dents with no evidence of being cut. The 18 groove walnut slide handle appears original with consistent wear to the rest of gun, The winchester 1897 shoulder stock appears to be a later replacement with no evidence of having a sling swivel or inspector's cartouches. The factory hard rubber buttplate has a 1" chip out of the bottom. broken piece included. The bore is very good/bright, the slide handle has some wear on the right side, action is smooth, the parkerized finish is about 705 with handling/edge wear, scratches, scuffs. The tube magazine cap is missing the screws. Comes with a a 1913 Remington bayonet with British proofs, 17" blade with scabbard, very good condition.
