Winchester Model 1895 lever action U.S. Army rifle, .30-40 cal., 28” barrel, large “US” stamped on top of receiver, K.S.M. inspector mark on top of bolt mechanism and on left side of lever; also an “A” stamped on the bottom of the rear portion of the lever; full stock with hand guard, bayonet lug, sling swivels at front two barrel bands, #11653 in overall fair to good condition showing a grey patina on metal surfaces with scattered pinprick pitting and an area of erosion and more moderate pitting on the left side of the receiver above the trigger assembly; bore is fair +, action is good once opened as lever retaining catch is sticky; wood stock is overall fair to good with some old scattered nicks, mars, scratches and filler repairs; a difficult Winchester variation to find in any condition as the U.S. Ordinance Dept. purchased 10,000 rifles in 1898-99 but rejected them all for an unknown reason; then later accepted them too late for war use. One hundred were field tested late in 1899 in the Philippines; the remaining 9900 in storage were sold in 1906 on the commercial market. It is believed most went to Cuba and Central America; specimens are scarce and most show hard use. From an old estate. Est.: $1,250-$2,500.
