Winchester Model 1895 lever action Rifle, .30 cal., carved fancy E style stock, factory engraved-$14.00, gold inlaid around breech end of barrel. Received in warehouse May 7, 1904 shipped from warehouse May 10, 1904 to order #226902. Correct style Lyman receiver sight not mentioned. This rifle has never before been offered for sale on the Collector’s Market and is consigned directly by the Grandson of the original owner Dr. Milbank Johnson. Dr. Johnson was born Oct. 13, 1871, died Oct. 3, 1944. His family was from old Texas stock and he moved to California and started a Medical Practice in Alhambra in the 1890’s. Johnson was actively involved in Medicine, Business, Education and the formation of infrastructure in developing Southern California. Among a volume of accomplishments Dr. Johnson was the second President of The Automobile Club of Southern California which had 56 members in 1903. To summarize it would be fair to state that Dr. Johnson was one of the most influential and important Southern Californians at the time this rifle was built for him. Physical Description: The rifle shows a 28” round barrel, with crescent butt and approx. 92-96% original bright blue finish with some slight losses of finish in the magazine area from operation of the lever, slight scratches and on left muzzle minor scratching from storage contact and some just beginning age and slight toning to metal. The wood is fine to near excellent showing sharp checkering, minor storage marks and slight mars with a few dings and marks in the points of the carving on the forend. The stock retains most of its original varnish and is crisp. The markings are sharp, edges crisp and rifle shows just slight use with an excellent bore. The engraving is very beautifully accomplished with a leaf and scroll design and a vignette of a stag on left front with two stags in panel on right side surrounded by leaves and scroll. The engraving could possibly be accomplished by Ulrich as it is of that fine quality for which the family is noted and extremely high billing $14.00 denotes an especially deluxe treatment as it is rare to find engraving costs over $10.00 at this time. Est. $25,000-50,000
