Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Unique J.C. '17 Marking

Manufactured in 1919. Pinned front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 200 yards. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the two line address/patent date followed by the two line nickel steel/smokeless powder marking and "30 W.C.F.". The top of the barrel and receiver at the breech have the Winchester oval proof. The underside of the receiver has the serial number stamped above "J.C. '17". "J.C" might stand for U.S. Captain James Van D. Crisp, who was assigned as Disbursing Officer, representing the Finance Dept. of the Equipment Division of the Signal Corps at Vancouver Barracks on October 28, 1917. This carbine does fall into the 835,000 to 853,000 serial number range (corresponds to manufacture dates accepted in the Madis publications of 1918-1919) of observed Model 1894 carbines purchased by the U.S. Government and issued to enforcement personnel securing the Pacific Northwest forests during WWI. The timber located in the region was considered vital to the war effort. Collectors have referred to these carbines as spruce guns. Note there are no "US" or ordnance bomb markings on the carbine; markings that have also been observed on these carbines. Blue finish with a saddle ring and stud on the left receiver side and a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate. The buttstock is stamped "42/49" near the buttplate tang.

Very fine. The carbine retains 90% plus original blue finish showing some thinning to a brown, some minor high edge wear and a smooth gray patina mixed with blue finish on the buttplate. A number of minor scratches are present on the receiver. The wood is excellent with some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
