Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle
This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1888. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, loading gate and bolt with casehardened remaining parts. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN, U.S.A.". , "45-70" is marked on top at the breech, "-MODEL 1886-" on the upper tang and the serial number is marked on the lower tang behind the lever, and marked "PAT, OCT. 14, 1884 / JAN. 20, 1885" directly behind the trigger. The left front of the receiver is marked with the number "4" and an arrow pointing at it from the right side (significance unknown). The barrel is equipped with a dovetailed silver blade front and adjustable rear sporting sights, full magazine and mounted with a smooth forearm with an iron end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 75% original blue finish with some light spotting, edge wear and vise marks on top of the breech end behind the rear sight. The magazine has a smooth mottled brown patina with strong original blue in protected areas. The receiver shows 30% faded original case colors mixed with smooth gray and silver gray patina. The sides of the hammer show most of the original case colors, strong on the protected areas of the lever with a smooth dark patina on the balance. There is a smooth dark patina on the forend cap and a mottled gray on the buttplate. The wood is very good with a dark finish on the left wrist and overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
