This is a very fine example of a Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1892. The rifle has a 26 inch octagon barrel, full length magazine and crescent buttplate. The barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate are blue and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The barrel has a dovetail mounted sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards. The rifle is fitted with a special order single set trigger. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is stamped on the top barrel flat just in front of the receiver. "-MODEL 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower tang is roll-stamped with the 1884/1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the script serial number, "81613" behind the lever.
BBL: 26 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70 Government
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 81613
Condition: Extremely fine. The rifle retains 90% plus of the slightly faded original blue on the barrel and magazine tube with some scattered nicks and dings. The case colors remain 75% intact, mostly on the sides of the receiver while the colors on the contact points on the upper and lower receiver and bottom of the lever have faded to a silver patina. Nearly all of the case colors are present on the sides of the lever and the hammer. The buttplate has aged to a dark mottled gray patina with traces of the casehardened finish in protected areas. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The stock and forearm are both very fine. Most of the original varnish finish remains intact. There are a number of minor storage and handling marks on the stock and forearm but no serious wear. This is an exceptional original example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with casehardened receiver and single set trigger.
