This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 rifle that was manufactured in 1899, in the always popular and very desirable "45-70" cartridge. The top barrel flat is marked in two lines: "----MANUFACTURED BY THE----/----WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A-----", with the breech end of the barrel marked "45-70". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are marked on the lower tang behind the trigger with the serial number towards the rear end. The barrel is equipped with a Marbles No. 5 bead front sight with the small ivory tip with an adjustable buckhorn rear sight. It has a standard walnut buttstock with crescent buttplate and walnut forend with steel nose cap. It has the blue barrel, magazine tube and bolt, with casehardened finish on the remaining metal surfaces. It has the full octagon barrel and magazine tube and it has been fitted with a set of non-factory late commercial sling swivels; one mounted on the lower end of the stock and the other mounted on a sliding ring on the magazine tube.
