Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Special Single Shot Rifle

This is an early production Winchester Model 1885 high wall sporting rifle that was manufactured in circa 1887. This rifle features a 30 inch octagon barrel, with the top flat marked with the standard Winchester factory two-line address ahead of the rear sight slot and "38-55" at the breech. The barrel is fitted with a windage adjustable globe front sight, with an adjustable sporting rear sight and a mid-range tang mounted vernier peep sight. The bottom of the barrel in front of the forearm is marked "3" and the lower tang is marked with the patent date behind the trigger and the serial number behind the lever. The rifle is fitted with a single set trigger. The barrel is blue and the receiver and lever casehardened. Mounted with deluxe nicely figured checkered walnut Schnabel forearm with an ebony forend insert and round knob pistol grip stock with a nickeled brass Swiss style buttplate. The left rear side of the forend and right front side of the buttstock has both been stamped with the number "164", which has lightened over time.

Fine. 60% faded blue finish remaining on the barrel and 30% case colors on the receiver and loading lever. The stock and forend are both in fine condition with a nice professionally restored varnish on the stock, that compliments the figure. The recut checkering on the refinished stock and forend has distinct lines showing wear across the tops of the checkering. A trace of nickel remains on the butt plate. The right side of the receiver and lower left side of the receiver both shows some old, fine pin-prick erosion/pitting spots, and the left barrel flat under the rear side has several small drift pin marks where the rear sight was moved laterally. Barrel vise marks remain on the rear portion of the barrel.
