Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Rifle in Desirable 45-70 Caliber with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1887. This rifle is fitted with a #3 octagon barrel chambered in the popular and desirable 45-70 caliber. The barrel is fitted with a blade front and adjustable buckhorn rear sights, and there is a short range tang mounted tang sight. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" at the breech. The bottom flat is marked "3" ahead of the forearm. The serial number is marked on the lower tang. Blue barrel, casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with an ebony forend insert and straight grip stock with a casehardened crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, 30 inch octagon #3 barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on January 4, 1888 and shipped to order number 1602 on September 6, 1888.

Very good. The barrel retains 80% original thinning blue finish with areas of plum patina. The receiver retains 70% plus original fading case colors with a smooth dove gray patina on the balance. The lever and buttplate also retain a strong 70% original faded case colors with a smooth silver gray patina on the balance. The buttstock is very fine with some scattered minor dings and dents. The forearm is revarnished. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. This is a desirable Winchester Model 1885 High Wall rifle in its original 45-70 caliber.
