Manufactured in 1898. The rifle features a #3 octagon barrel with a globe front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight and a short range tang peep sight. The top flat is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" and "38-55", and the lower tang bears the serial number and patent markings with "5456XXM" stamped internally. Casehardened high-wall receiver, with double set triggers. Extra-fancy checkered walnut pistol grip stock, numbered "2850" under the buttplate, with an ebony tip insert and "tuning fork" style palm rest on the Schnabel forearm, hard rubber Winchester grip cap, raised cheekpiece and nickel finished Swiss buttplate.

Condition: Very fine as partially refinished and assembled, with 98% of the original blue finish, showing minor spotting and handling marks overall. Bright and vivid case colors are present on the receiver, with silvering along the high edges and a few areas of fading. The replacement buttstock is very fine, with mild chipping and cracks at the internally repaired wrist and revarnished around the palm rest base, light pressure dents, and attractive grain. Mechanically excellent.
