Winchester Model 1876 lever action rifle, 40-60 cal., cut-down 20” octagon barrel, blue finish, Indian tacked and shortened wood butt stock, #60465. This gun is in overall well-worn condition showing a dark patina on metal surfaces with scattered areas of erosion, dings, scratches and mars from years of carry, fair bore, good action, dust cover long missing; good markings, dry wood with numerous nicks and mars from carry and storage; both fore end and cut-down butt stock show old brass tack designs and the comb of the butt stock also displays two designs, one on each side, done by use of iron pins, one in the form of a turtle and the other in the form of a “four winds” cross; also iron pins lined around the back edge of the stock. An old cartridge shell has been inlaid into the remnant of the butt trap. Accompanied by a letter signed by G.M. Rainwater indicating he purchased this rifle in 1982 from Woody Richards of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Mr. Rainwater is remembered by old attendees of the Great Western Gun Show as a “regular” who carried this gun around the shows while dressed in period costume. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
