This is an example of an early Second Model 1878 carbine that was manufactured in 1878 and features the dust cover guide rail attached to the top of the receiver by two screws. Fixed front sight with a folding rear carbine sight graduated to 1,000 yards and marked "1876". The top of the barrel is marked with the two line Winchester/King's Improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight and "CAL/45-60" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1876." and the serial number appears on the lower tang behind the lever. There is a saddle ring and stud mounted on the left side of the receiver and it is fitted with a full forearm with a steel end cap and straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate.

Serial Number: 6427
Condition:
Very good. The rifle retains 30% original finish with a smooth brown and gray patina on the balance. The otherwise fine replacement rifle pattern buttstock has had a coat of varnish applied some time ago with a deep scratch on the left side of the forearm, a couple of small gouges on the left side of the stock, and overall some scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
