Winchester Model 1873 lever action first model rifle, 44-40 cal., 28” octagon barrel, set trigger, with desirable raised thumbprint dust cover, #2295, received in the warehouse Sept. 25, 1874, shipped on the same day, with copy offactory letter. The rifle retains a pleasing 50%-70% original blue overall evenly drifting to patina with some scattered light erosion and normal aging just starting and some evidence of bright original blue; the markings are sharp, theedges are crisp, the stocks show an excellent repair and small restorations with a light re-application of varnish, good wood-to-metal fit; the hammer and lever show considerable original case hardening, the sights are original, the dustcover and loading gate show traces of bright original blue, the action is tight, the bore is near excellent. The longer than standard barrel and set trigger are unusual in the early ‘73s and raised thumbprint dust cover models are rarelyfound with any condition or special features whatsoever. Est.: $10,000-$20,000.
