Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine with London Retailer Marking and Factory Letter

This is a 1882 production Third Model 1873 Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine with the distinctive dust rail integral to the top of the receiver. It features a fixed front sight and a folding ladder carbine rear sight. The top of the barrel has the standard two line address/King's improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight. The dust cover is inscribed "W. WATSON & SONS 308 HIGH HOLBORN LONDON". The left rear of the barrel is marked with a "Crown/GP", "Crown/V" and the preliminary black powder proofs. The upper left front of the receiver is stamped with a "Crown/V" proof mark. The upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1873." and the serial number is on the lower tang. Saddle ring and staple are mounted on the left rear of the receiver and the carbine is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock, with an iron carbine buttplate with compartment. The three piece cleaning rod is included in the buttstock. The accompanying factory letter verifies the carbine configuration, that it was received in the warehouse on May 24, 1882 and shipped as 1 of 50 to order number 33,108 on June 2, 1882.

Fine. The carbine retains 40% plus original thin blue finish mixed with smooth plum patina. The wood is also fine with scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine.
