Manufactured in 1883, this Model 1873 carbine is a Third Model with the dust cover operating on the central guide that is integrally machined as part of the receiver. Fixed front and folding ladder rear sights marked "1873" and graduated to 900 yards, with the saddle ring staple with ring on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two line address/King's improvement patent dates marking with, "MODEL 1873" on the upper tang, and serial number on the lower tang. There is a small stamping on the bottom front of the frame "J.R / 12769" which has been identified as the marking of James Rosier of Melbourne, Australia who imported a number of Winchester 1873 carbines. This particular carbine was sold to the Pentridge Jail in Melbourne, Australia. There is also a large engraved black filled "40" on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate with compartment. The copy of the accompanying Cody Firearms Museum Records Office sheet verifies serial number 135283 as a Model 1873 Carbine that was received in the warehouse on 10-13-1883 and shipped on order number 10149, 1-8-1884.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with traces of original blue finish around the edges of the side plate, and strong original finish in the area of the saddle ring. There are a few scratches on the right side of the receiver along the rear edge of the side plate. The buttplate has a smooth silver gray patina. The wood has been freshened with a coat of varnish some time ago and remains very good with almost all of the varnish remaining and overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine. A solid 1873 carbine with an interesting past.
