Manufactured in 1891, this particular example is a Third Model with the distinctive integral dust cover rail. Blade front sight and adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's Improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight, and "38 W.C.F." at the breech. The brass elevator is marked "38 CAL". The model designation is marked on the upper tang and the serial number on the lower tang. All blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever, and mounted with a smooth forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a iron shotgun buttplate. The copy of the accompanying Cody Firearms Museum Records Office sheet verifies serial number "402558" as a Model 1873 rifle, 38 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, received in the warehouse on 11-25-1891 and shipped on order number 16902, 12-17-1891.

Condition: Very fine as partially refinished (barrel and magazine tube assembly) with 90% of the thin original blue finish remaining on the receiver showing some minor flaking and wear on the receiver. 50% dull case colors remain on the hammer sides and the lever has a smooth mottled brown patina. The buttplate retains most of the blue finish with a few small areas of minor oxidation. The wood is very good with scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
