Winchester Model 1873 First Model saddle ring carbine, .44-40 cal., with thumbprint dust cover, serial #24873. The barrel and magazine tube show a lightly cleaned metal surfaces going back to patina with goodbarrel address; the frame has gone to brown with traces of blue mixed in. The stocks have been lightly sanded and refinished. The original small parts are retained; action good, bore rough, some screws replaced.These early carbines are hard to find and were in evidence of use at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876 by the American Indian insurgents who left .44-40 cal. cartridge cases behind.
