You are bidding on a Winchester Model 1873 .38-40 Caliber Octagon Rifle. The rifle features a 24" octagon barrel, blue'd finish, walnut stock, Buckhorn rear adjustable sight, and full length magazine. This is the classic “Gun That Won the West!” An unusually fine condition example, this 124 year old Winchester still retains fine blue on the receiver that has never been cleaned or refinished. The 24” octagon barrel also retains excellent and clear Winchester markings along with fine naturally aged original blue finish. All original wood displays the desirable tight wood to metal fitting around the upper and lower tangs indicating that it has never been sanded or replaced. Even the fine condition screw heads indicate this rifle has not been apart or worked on. It retains a very tight action and strong springs. The sliding dust cover on the receiver top is original (these usually found missing or replaced). The un-polished brass lifter on the receiver bottom is correctly and legibly engraved with “38 CAL” and shows an attractive mellow patina. The lever catch is also intact. This superior large caliber Model 1873 is in far better condition than normally encountered on the collector market today. Even the bore is in fine condition with strong rifling. The buckhorn rear sight and blade front sight are Winchester original and have been on the rifle since it left the Winchester warehouse. The Model 1873 was the standard for lever actions throughout the Frontier Period in the west which, in some areas like Montana, lasted well into the twentieth century. Most surviving specimens show heavy use and often abuse with broken or missing parts. This fine rifle in a very desirable large caliber recently came out of an old Montana estate collection. This rifle was manufactured in 1893. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 454444B
