Winchester Model 1873 1st model rifle with impressed thumb print dust cover in .44-40 caliber with 26” octagon barrel, full magazine, rifle butt with factory letter confirming barrel length and received in thewarehouse August 4, 1878 changed to 26” on October 28, 1878 shipped from the warehouse on October 30, 1878 with 44 arms to order number 13557 with factory letter addressed to Mr. James D Gordon author of the Winchester1873 book and referenced in his text on this subject. The rifle remains in good to very good original condition showing approximately 10% original blue mixing with the brown patina some scattered light to moderateerosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The edges are fairly sharp and the barrel address is good also model 1873 is very visible on the tang. The wood is good with normal scratches, mars and handling. Therifle shows a good wood to metal fit. There is strong traces of blue on the loading gate and some slight traces of case hardening on the hammer and lever.
