Winchester Model 1873 1st model lever action rifle in .44-40 caliber with raised thumb print dust cover, serial number 2156. This rifle shows a 24” round barrel with full magazine and rifle butt. Factory letterconfirms features and received in the warehouse September 16, 1874, shipped from the warehouse on September 16, 1874 with 14 other arms to order number 1978. The letter is addressed to James D Gordon author of theWinchester 1873 book and formally in his collection where this gun is referenced in the text. The rifle shows traces of original finish mixed with a patina and some scattered light to slightly heavy erosion and pittingfrom exposure to the elements. The barrel address is good and model markings are clear. There is some finish where protected. The wood stocks show some staining and exposure and are good overall with good wood to metalfit. The raised thumb print dust cover matches patina very well and there’s only slight wear on the checkered oval. The action is good and the bore is fair to good.
