Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle .44 caliber converted to center fire and inscribed on left side plate “Ben Daniels, U.S. Marshal, Arizona”. Serial number 120026. This rifle descended from Russ Segel one ofSan Diego’s oldest collectors to his son who is now in his 80s. It is believed that Russ Senior obtained this rifle from Daniels descendents more than 50 years ago. This cataloger examined the rifle in Segel’scollection in the early 1970’s and at that time Segel had many personal effects, mementos and newspaper articles on Daniels that have been lost since the elder Segels passing. The rifle shows a gray to brownpatina finish and scattered light to moderate pitting and erosion with some hard wear and frontier use. The rear sight has been changed to a carbine type and an unusual front post is mounted in the original base to work withthis 73 carbine type rear sight. The frame shows some wear on the side plates and the left side plate has been polished down when it was removed and engraved long ago as it is down in size against the balance of the
