Winchester Model 1866 lever action musket, 44RF cal., #69445; left side of receiver period engraved in block letters “County Jail, San Francisco, 1872.”. Top of receiver engraved in large letters “.44. WRF.”. One of only three known marked ’66’s; the last known example sold in the Hugh Hayes auction and showed similar engraving; the marking on the top of the frame made sense as it identified the rifle as a rimfire whereas the City of San Francisco also used Lightning Coltrifles in 44 CF at this time. The rifle remains in good to very good condition with traces of original blue mixed with patina on barrel; some erosion and pin prick pitting just starting; good sharp barrel address; crisp frame with honeypatina; the stocks lightly cleaned with steel wool but good wood to metal fit, just very slightly undersized. The small parts and screws show original finish and the loading shows original finish, the bore is fair to good with a coupleareas of erosion and darkening. An absolutely original and desirable ’66 musket with a rare Police markings. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
