Winchester Model 1866 lever action carbine, .44 cal., 20” barrel, blue finish, brass frame, heavily period raised engraved Mexican-style ornamentation, wood stocks, sling swivels, #75588. This gun is in overall very good condition showing a grey patina on the barrel and loading tube and toned brass patina on the receiver; the non-factory engraving is expertly accomplished, very deep and ornate in floral and vine patterns onthe breech end of the barrel and on all four sides of the receiver including a classic Mexican snake and eagle over flags on the front top of the receiver; additionally, there is a stylized intertwining of ribbonson the rear top portion of the receiver along with matching engraving on the top of the brass butt plate and also engraving on both barrel bands and loading lever; very good action, dark bore, very good wood stocks with some carry wear and a couple small old losses at the top frame end of the butt stock. According to oral tradition from the consignor, it is believed that this ’66 carbine was the personal rifle of Don Antonio
