Winchester Model 1866 Third Model Lever Action Musket
The Winchester factory actually termed these Model 1866's as "Infantry Rifles" because the term "Musket" evoked visions of the unwieldy long barrel, large bore rifles that were produced during the Civil war era. Manufactured in 1870, it has the correct 27 inch round barrel with the magazine tube that stops about 2 3/4 inches from the muzzle allowing this rifle to have a full 17 round capacity. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's improvement patent dates. It has the third pattern receiver with the block serial number located on the lower tang directly behind the trigger. Standard musket style rear sight with a fixed front post sight. Straight grain American walnut straight grip stock, 3/4 length forearm with sling swivels and brass buttplate with compartment. Approximately 14,000 of these Muskets were produced

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark patina with some small areas of spotting and some minor pitting on the muzzle and lever. The fine frame has an even, pleasant aged patina. The wood is very good with a few small gouges and scattered overall minor dings, dents and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The markings are clear. The action is fine. This is a good, original example of a scarce Winchester Model 1866 Musket. The Model 1866 Muskets typically saw hard service and are rarely encountered in very good original condition.
