The Winchester factory actually termed these Model 1866's as "Infantry Rifles" because the term "Musket" evoked visions of the unwieldy long barrel, large bore rifles that were produced during the Civil War era. Manufactured in 1870, it has the correct 27" round barrel with the magazine tube that stops about 2 3/4 inches from the muzzle allowing this rifle to have a full 17 round capacity. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's improvement patent dates. It has the third pattern receiver with the block serial number located on the lower tang behind the trigger with a horizontal "B" behind the number. Standard musket style rear sight with a fixed front post sight, and mounted with a straight grain American walnut straight grip stock, 3/4 length forearm with sling swivels and brass buttplate with compartment, (cleaning rod not included). The buttplate tang is stamped "56" ahead and behind the screw. Winchester produced approximately 14,000 of these Muskets.

Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina. The brass has a dark natural, untouched aged patina. The undersize wood has been sanded with a coat of oil some time ago and remains very good with overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches associated with a firearm of this age. The barrel marking is readable. The action is good.
