Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine
This is an example of a Winchester Third Model 1866 Carbine that was manufactured in 1869. The carbine has the distinctive brass receiver, round barrel with full length magazine, barrel band with integral front sight, saddle ring on the left side of the frame and walnut stock with crescent brass buttplate. The carbine has a hammer spur with coarse knurling and no borders and small loading lever. The rear sight is a period replacement. The serial number, "43504" is stamped on the lower receiver tang ahead of the trigger. A small "B" is stamped behind the serial number. The lightly stamped barrel markings are no longer, which is typical of many Model 1866 Carbines that saw even moderate use.

Fair. The barrel and magazine have a smooth gray patina with some scattered age discoloration. The barrel bands have scattered pitting and light scratches. The loading lever and hammer have a brown patina with light pitting on the hammer. The brass receiver and buttplate have been polished and show moderate to heavy wear. The receiver has numerous slight dents and scratches which are concentrated around the screws and the edges of the side plates. The letter "T" is lightly scratched in the left side plate. The buttplate shows the scratches and dents associated with actual use. The period replacement stock and forearm have been lightly sanded and refinished and are in fair condition. This is a solid and good looking example of a desirable, 1869 production Winchester Model 1866 Carbine.
