Winchester Hotchkiss 1st Model Bolt Action Carbine
Manufactured in 1881. Left side of receiver marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. / PATENTED OCT. 16. 1860. JUNE 25. 1872 JULY 23. 1878. AND UNDER / B. B. HOTCHKISS’ PAT’S AUG.17.1869. FEB.15.1870, NOV.9.1875.NOV.14.1876. JAN.23.1877.". This is the civilian version, made entirely at Winchester without the cleaning rod compartment in the forearm. The sights are the standard military style but the ski jump rear sight does not have the "C" marking, as the Winchester made sight is slightly different. The single barrel band is marked "U". The First Model Hotchkiss has the magazine cutoff switch on the right side of the stock between the bolt and the trigger guard. There is a saddle ring on the left side of the stock. The bolt handle is long and of the straight variety.

Condition: Period refinished, with 95% of the arsenal style blue on the barrel remaining with thinning near the muzzle and a brown patina forming on the underside of the barrel. Minor pitting on left side receiver with mild pressure marks on the rear. The wood is very good with scattered light nicks and scratches throughout. There is a small crack on the right side of stock near the receiver with a large crack around the wrist area from the magazine cutoff switch to the saddle ring. Mechanically excellent.
