Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet and Factory Letter
This is an example of a First Model 1873 musket with the dust cover held in place with grooved guides on either side and a checkered oval finger grip found on top of the dust cover. The included Winchester factory letter confirms the serial number and musket variation. The letter states that the musket was received in the warehouse on 13 August 1875 and shipped on 22 February 1876 with seven other arms to order number 5390. The musket has the front blade sight/bayonet lug and a ladder rear sight graduated to 9. It has the standard two line address/King's patent date barrel marking, "MODEL 1873" on the upper tang and the very faint lightly filed serial number on the lower tang. Has the correct nearly full length forearm fastened to the barrel with three barrel band and smooth straight grip stock with trapdoor buttplate and sling swivels.

Good. The musket has a smooth brown gray patina with some minor pitting (mostly on the receiver). There is a minor crack on the left side of the forearm between the first and second bands and two filled repairs on the buttstock, otherwise the refinished wood is good with numerous minor dings and scratches (mostly on the forearm), and some minor gouges. The buttstock is ill-fitting at the frame. The bayonet is fine, showing a polished appearance.
