Winchester 1886 From W.F. Sheard Livingston, Mont.
This is an exceedingly rare original Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Model 1886 lever action rifle chambered in 40-82 from famed rifle sight inventor, W.F. Sheard in Livingston, Montana. The rifle features a 25.5 inch octagon barrel with buckhorn graduated rear sight and Lyman/Sheard front sight. The rifle also features a full length magazine tube and semi-deluxe Walnut forearm and straight grip walnut stock with crescent steel butt plate. The top flat of the barrel is stamped, "From W.F. Sheard - Livingston Mont. / 40-82 W.C.F.” along with, “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” The rifle was custom ordered from W.F. Sheard with a heavier barrel having a "Sheard's Special Increased Twist" (an additional cost) in the very scarce .40-82 Winchester Center Fire caliber along with the special sights. W.F. Sheard marked Winchester Model 1886 Rifles are some of the scarcer of this model and most scarce of a Montana related Winchester. The rifle shows very good to good condition for its early age with much of the original finish retained along the barrel and frame with signs of use along with very good condition original wood. The rifle has a Serial Number of 45453 and was manufactured in 1890. James D. Julia sold a Sheard marked Winchester Model 1886 in their Firearms - Fall 2009 sale for $11,500.00 (estimated at $12,500 to $17,500) and Rock Island Auction Co. sold a Sheard marked Winchester Model 1886 in their May 2, 2014 sale for $7,475.00 with this being in a scarcer 40-82 caliber. Antique Firearm Manufacture Pre-1898 (in 1890) NO FFL Required.
