This is a Winchester Third Model 1876 Rifle that was manufactured in 1883 and subsequently rebarrelled. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forend cap and receiver. The hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have a casehardened finish and the straight-grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The rifle has the third style receiver with integral dust cover guide and dust cover with serrated rear edge. The half-round/half-octagon barrel has a dovetailed mount front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding, adjustable leaf, rear sight. The rear sight is graduated to 1000 yards and marked "1876". The buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER"S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "50" and the Winchester oval, "W/P" proofmark adopted in 1905 are stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the dust cover is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." in two lines. The caliber, "50-95", is engraved on the bottom of the loading gate. The top of the receiver tang is marked: "{MODEL 1876}" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The serial number, "48296" is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The Winchester Model 1876 was the first repeating rifle to chamber the powerful cartridges previously only available in single-shot rifles. All Winchester Model 1876 rifles are very desirable. The Model 1876 rifles with 26-inch barrels chambered for the Winchester .50-95. Express cartridge was introduced in 1879, rifles chambered for the .50-95 WCF are collectible. No factory letter is available to writer to verify caliber, so buyer should bid accordingly.

Condition: Custom restored overall. The rifle has been refinished and retains nearly 95% of the high polish blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust plate. Traces of very fine pitting are visible on the dust cover and lower receiver. Most of the casehardened finish is visible on the hammer and loading lever. The buttplate has a dark patina with some scattered, very light, pitting. The barrel, dust cover and receiver tang markings are clear. The bore shows moderate wear. The Winchester proofmarks on the barrel indicates that it may be a period replacement. The stock and forearm have been re-varnished and are in very good condition with minimal handling marks.
